When Your Teen Is a Perfectionist: How to Support Them
Your teen works hard, gets good grades, and holds themselves to high standards.
That can look like something to celebrate. But sometimes, behind the straight A's is a teen who cries over a B, stays up past midnight redoing assignments, or shuts down when something does not go as planned.
Perfectionism in teens is more common than many parents realize, and it is often closely tied to anxiety. The good news is that with the right support, teens can learn to ease the pressure they put on themselves.
Healthy high standards vs. perfectionism
Wanting to do well is a good thing. The difference is in how it feels.
Healthy striving comes from interest and motivation. Perfectionism comes from fear. A teen with healthy standards can feel disappointed by a mistake and move on. A perfectionistic teen may feel like a mistake says something bad about who they are.
Signs of perfectionism in teens
Perfectionism does not always look like a perfect report card. Parents might notice their teen:
Spending far longer on homework than the assignment needs
Putting off tasks out of fear they will not be done perfectly
Reacting intensely to small mistakes or lower grades
Quitting activities they cannot excel at right away
Comparing themselves constantly to friends or people online
Having stomachaches, headaches, or trouble sleeping before tests
How parents can help
Parents often feel unsure whether to push their teen or tell them to let it go. Small, steady changes at home can make a real difference.
Try praising effort and courage, not just results. Share your own mistakes and how you handled them, so your teen sees that messing up is a normal part of life. When your teen is upset, ask whether they want help or just want you to listen. And protect downtime, so there is space in their week where nothing is being graded.
Teen therapy at Livia Counseling
Perfectionism can feel lonely for teens, especially when everyone around them only sees their success. You do not have to figure this out alone.
In teen therapy, teens get a safe space to talk about the pressure they feel without worrying about disappointing anyone. Our therapists use approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help teens recognize perfectionistic thinking, handle mistakes with more self compassion, and build healthier ways to cope with stress. We also support parents along the way.
